I looked at the flyer with passion and determination in my eyes. I was going to be the most hard working worker on the job and I will get the most prosperous promotion possible! I walked into the office, gung-ho and I asked to sign me up. I was asked a lot of questions and I answered to the best of my ability. Then, there was a long silence. It was a very unnerving and anxiety inducing silence. I anticipated the worst but after a long time of waiting… I got my answer.
Luckily, I was able to grab the last final job opening they had and they had reviewed my resume to find out that I was indeed fit for the job. Then, they grabbed the job application and had me sign it. I was quivering in fear and excitement to see how this job will help shape my life. I grabbed the pen and skimmed through the document. Then, I quickly wrote my signature down and followed the man out of the building. I was then assigned to work at a sawmill in Aden. I eventually went to work on my assigned task but I was surprised by the hostility in the air. Workers who were on strike were yelling at some other workers in the area. I tried to ignore it and worked on my own thing.
However, after a while, I heard fighting and crys. It sounded like someone was in trouble! I ran to figure out what was happening and I saw a crowd of people. Some of the workers I recognized that I knew were on strike and some I didn’t recognized. Everyone was bruised and some were bleeding. Then, everyone gathered around to look at what is ahead of them. There were some soldiers with guns coming forward and I attempted to run away.
I didn't want to get involved in this. I just wanted to have a job, just wanted to get some money to provide food and supplies to my family. To see my smiling child grow up to be successful... to be happy. That’s all I ever wanted, and all I got instead was a shot in the back. Then everything went black...
